Software developers are writing dramatically less code as AI tools take over their day-to-day programming tasks, with some writing none at all. Clive Thompson interviewed 75 developers across tech companies and startups to discover how this shift is reshaping their jobs, skills, and the future of software itself. Majority of software developers now outsource substantial programming work to AI, with some writing zero lines of code while remaining highly productive and excited about their enhanced capabilities. Developers worry about deskilling and job losses for junior programmers, as hiring for entry-level coding positions has already declined 16% according to Stanford research on job postings.
